POLITICALLY SPEAKING

Dear Politically Speaking Readers and Writers — There’s Change A’ Comin’

Both for our country and for our publication.

Hello dear readers and writers for Politically Speaking. I am so glad you are here. What a week this has been in politics, for the United States and around the globe! Change is a’ comin’ to say the very least.

To begin, I am so proud of the work we are doing here at PS to open the doors of communication, encourage healthy political dialogue, and to give voice to many writers who are trying out political writing for the first time. We have a diverse group of writers and readers and we look to continue to develop that diversity. Our followership has reached over 1400 and continues to pick up new writers each week. Overall, I am very pleased with the growth we have experienced here.

But some things will be changing. With your patience and understanding, those changes will be for the betterment of all.

When I began this publication, it was with a strong vision, one I feel most of you have connected to very well. So far, so good! We are doing remarkable work here (and will continue to do so with renewed fervor as the political climate is shifting again in a vastly new direction!).

But for me personally, things have changed rather dramatically as well

Folks, my personal life has changed in every single way possible since I started this publication a year ago. Without any sugar-coating — my personal life is in utter turmoil. On top of it all, I have launched a freelance writing business and now must work full time to support myself going forward. I know in my heart, some things have to be taken “off my plate” so that I can focus on more pressing matters.

I’ve made a shortlist of a few things that I will be stepping away from, at least in a leadership role, and my “baby,” Politically Speaking is one of those things.

For a few reasons:

  • Politically Speaking deserves leadership that has the time, the passion, the energy — all of it — to keep that momentum of growth and support that you all need.
  • Politically Speaking is an “outlier” for my branding.
  • I must narrow the scope of all my work and direct my efforts to more pressing matters in my personal life.
  • I simply must focus more of my energy where my work can be monetized and limit activities that chip away at the time I need to do so.

In short, I will be transferring ownership of this publication over into the very capable hands of Scott Tarlo, effective November, 25, 2020. I will be continuing as a writer here at PS but no longer serving in the leadership role. Scott and I have discussed my continuing to write POLIprompts for the group, but nothing on this has been decided.

Scott has prepared a new “Welcome to Politically Speaking” page and I encourage you to go and read that!

We have also discussed many aspects of how the group operates, the shared vision for the group moving forward (still that open and welcoming platform you all love!) but Scott will provide you with all the answers to your questions and any new directives you need moving forward. I hope you all will continue to follow my work and interact with me. I am not going away, just taking a very necessary back seat so I can focus on some other pressing things.

It appears I have a gift for building community. I also need to find new readers and supporters from other areas of Medium and if you see me creating other groups, or participating in other things, don’t freak out. It is not because I have lost interest in this one AT ALL. I LOVE Politically Speaking and all of our wonderful writers. But, like you, I am chasing MPP success and trying to eek out a living as a writer. Sometimes building communities for others has helped to grow my own readership. I am a woman of grand ideas. I leave the future open to chasing whatever those ideas may be.

I will be spending the majority of my time working with new private clients and building my writing business, while growing my Medium presence as much as possible. The future is bright for us all — we just have to chase it sometimes. (Also, readership is very low right now and it usually drops off a lot in the winter holiday months — let’s increase our support for each other‘s work here in PS.)

Consider this a new beginning.

Consider this the beginning of new guidance but a continued vision for the acceptance of all voices. I am proud of this community. I hope you all will continue to grow with us and contribute your wonderful pieces while reading and supporting the voices of others. I know I will still be an engaging presence here at P.S.

Let’s do this.

Christina M. Ward
