Poets on Medium (POM)

I started a Facebook group one afternoon on a whim. I wanted a safe space, a learning space, a space for poets to come together to celebrate our craft. What began that day has far exceeded my expectations.

Medium is a great platform for poetry. We all know that monetizing poetry can be tricky and difficult, but Medium gives us a platform to do this, and I am very grateful for that.

However, it can be difficult to gain traction on Medium when most of your work is poetry. I began to see others doing wonderful poetic work and I wanted to know these individuals better — learn from each other, grow together.

Poets on Medium (POM) is the name of the group. We have quickly gained to 155 members and we have a 94% activity rate amongst our members. This is most certainly impressive. We have an openness there which supports growth, positivity, acceptance, community, and most of all learning and creativity.

(When you request to join you will be asked two questions: One, to provide your Medium profile link, and Two, will you be supportive of the creativity of others.)

We have 13 different countries represented, a variety of religions and lifestyles, and we welcome people of all race, gender, and sexual orientation. We do not discriminate based on your talent or your experience. We want all people to feel their creativity is appreciated.

Participate in the daily threads (we have a lot of people that read and comment on every poem in the thread!!), share your special posts individually (sometimes a poem is so special you just want to share it on its own!), utilize the teaching tools shared by admin, or join one of our events! Our current event is to create a handmade poetry chapbook! Today, I am kicking off #Sonnetober to celebrate the form of sonnets! But most of all — support each other and share together a love for poetry.

Emojis are optional — but encouraged.

Just look at some of the comments our members have been sharing —

… you’ve done such a fantastic job building a fun and friendly community where all poets on Medium can feel welcome. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been a Medium member, all are welcome. There is just enough order that it’s not restrictive, but it’s not chaotic either. There’s a lot of love in this community. We support each other and that’s beautiful. ❤️ — Sam Kimberle

I appreciate the support from other poets on Medium. I also love reading everyone’s poems. I see no problem with members supporting other members in this way. I feel like I am making connections I wouldn’t otherwise make. 💖 — Marie Prichard

…we do so much good here and it’s within our power as poet family and as poet individual to do even more good and to use this group to give us the support we need to write and create and to lift each other up — every other word Ashwini says is about lifting up and celebrating and it’s the most beautiful group I’ve ever been in. — Jenny Justice

This group is wonderful, and I’m glad to have discovered it, grateful for the support. — Elaine Hamilton

…this group has quickly become my favorite. There’s a sense of genuine community here — Jessi Roman

Thank you all POM members who make our group a great place to be every day.

A very special thank you to Ashwini Dodani for volunteering his time to help moderate the group, for offering his positivity and support, and for leading us in daily threads. 💕
