I love your descriptive writing. The question she asked you reminds me of a question I used to get a lot: “What are you?” I would answer “Um…American?” I realize, looking back, that they were confused by my being white-looking but having very ethnic-looking hair. (It’s been straightened and curling-ironed in that profile pic on my Medium profile — but it is very very curly naturally.)

It confused people and they would abruptly and rudely ask me that wanting to know my race. What business is it of theirs anyway? I haven’t had the question in awhile but I think it is because, for the most part, people have figured out it is rude.

I don’t think you have to explain your name to anyone. They don;t have to explain their name to you right? What an odd question for her to have asked you. It would have been more appropriate for her to ask if you had a nickname, for their records.
