I think they should also count the time people spend typing up a moved response to our work.
I write mostly poetry. I jus had my biggest week on Medium, monetarily speaking. Even had a 19.00 poem this week. Of my top 4 performers my entire Medium time here — 2 are poems and 2 are articles written about writing poems. These people that are affected — are my primary audience as well.
So worried. But the plan for me is wait and see — compare stats to what I have been seeing, then decide if making the adjustments to my work to be competitive will compromise my personal objectives. Some will leave, but the shift toward recruiting new members to read our work has been clear in these changes — we are now after true fans, not just a wide one-time readership from people who happened across our work. We need repeat fans of our work that read us regularly. AND we need to find numbers and numbers and numbers of people to read our poetry and spend time doing it. No quick scanners please. Read it, absorb it, follow us, return to our work.
Everyone — please read more fiction and flash fiction and poetry.
The next few weeks will tell a lot — and it will be a bumpy ride. I hope some weird “algorithmic math” works out to our benefit.
