On This Path to Success — It is Time to Get Real With Your Plans

we can’t avoid #ClapGate, but we can set our sites on success

Sometimes the claps are broken. (#ClapGate) Sometimes the site goes down for a few hours and leaves us all twirling in our living rooms wondering what to do with ourselves.

There are things on Medium that are out of our hands, but not all things.

Come with me!

Goal Number 1

Write for 10 different Pubs per week. I’ve been saying this for quite some time — that diversifying your Pubs is the key to feeding your new followership and getting eyes on your work. But I have gotten lazy in this regard. It is so much easier to self publish, to publish within Pubs that I am an editor, or to keep reusing pubs with a quick turnaround of publishing.

But doing the same thing everyday and expecting to see greater results is simply asinine. The definition of insanity?

Therefore, I am rededicating myself to my original goal of diversifying publication participation. I am applying for writer status in a few new pubs each week as well.

Let’s face it — new followers are key.

My original goal regarding followership was to be at 1K by the end of the summer. I am sitting at a healthy 991. Close enough but not quite reaching my goal.

This does not mean the goal cannot be amended.

I am currently setting my sites on 1100 followers by the end of September. Can this be done? Of course, it can! And part of the attaining of this goal will be achieved by diversifying my Pub usage.

I am going to keep my chin up! Writing is hard. It is hard work that is often difficult to monetize. I realize this uphill battle is not mine and mine alone.

Struggling to stay afloat when the waters are so full of others doing the exact same thing, does not mean that my writing does not have quality and value.

I will keep my sites set on my individual goals and remind myself frequently that my voice matters.

I will continue to build on the wonderful relationships that have made my Medium path pleasant. You guys are the flowers along the roadside — a never-ending stream of color, inspiration, and beauty.

Placing value on these relationships and authenticity in each conversation helps to build community, celebrate diversity, and fuel the fire that keeps us all burning for words.

These floral communities make all of the hard work worth it. I will continue to embrace and build on this enriching part of my life.

Part of my niche here on Medium is to lift up other poets. I will continue to do this, as well as press for a greater appreciation for the genre of poetry on Medium.

There’s always the Adopt-A-Poet program to support, right?!

I will continue to be bold and authentic with my storytelling and my poetry. I will continue to make strong statements about the world around me. And I will follow my artistic inspirations.

I will not let my internal drive to find monetary success for my family completely usurp my intrinsic poetic art.

I will let my art be art. And I will celebrate it.

Last but not least, I will put in the hard work and I will strive for curation. Curation is the most baffling part of Medium, but a necessary part if I want to achieve my goals.

Curation. Curation. Curation.

A worthy goal and one I will make a priority. I realize most of this is out of my hands but I can always seek to improve my work to the best of my ability.

Honing my voice, learning to be a better editor, and learning more about my craft on a regular basis is key to improving as a writer. This is one of the biggest reasons I am here.

Setting personal goals on Medium is no different than setting them with any other job that you have had. I find it necessary on my path to success — and you should too! Take a few moments to map out the next portion of your Medium path…and take the time to enjoy the flowers along the way.

And mark my words:

This is my path and it will lead to success!
