You may be one — and not even know it! Come along writer…let’s RISE!
Did you know that young ferns are rolled up? Yes, ferns…as in, these guys:
Ferns in the forest always give me such a feeling of peace.
I write about them in my poetry. I think of their sway and bend in the lower vascular forest cover and I wonder what magical things could be living amongst these feathery plants.
Some ferns are rolled up like balls as they grow. These “rolls” are called fiddleheads. Some of them are a bit gnarly and some are elegantly beautiful but regardless…the thought some years ago came to me how much like fiddleheads we are as creators, writers, artists.
We must create. it is what we do.
The image is more visual than an exact metaphor, but the concept is pleasurable nonetheless. Picture yourself in a delicate coil. Can you see yourself resting there in the intermittent forest light, on the cool shaded creek side? Can you hear that babbling brook singing a tender song? Or is it the sounds of the birds that move you? Or perhaps you go someplace else altogether to gather yourself and prepare for the creation process.
No matter — whatever feeds your creativity.
We turn inward, fold into ourselves and nurture our creative spirit. We create. We rise in the sun. We release our creations out into the world. We gather inspiration. We roll up. And so it begins again.
- Absorbs-Reflects-Nurtures-Grows-Gives=your gift brings change!
It is a beautiful process. A nurturing one, if we are careful with ourselves. And the giving — the giving is a birthing; a gift to others in the hopes that what we have done, what we have created from that deep part of ourselves will somehow teach, inspire, enrich the lives of others.
Beautiful, right? Like a fiddlehead rising in the sun — unfurling to its most elegant, open form.
While this is the inspiration behind my writing platform Fiddleheads & Floss, it is also a metaphor for the writing process that you may enjoy thinking about for a moment — even if you are not an F&F poetry fan. (I address my Letters “Hiya Fiddleheads!)
Fun stuff about ferns for the geeky-creatives like myself:
What it means to be a fiddlehead:
- We want the world to be a better place — through creativity
- We have creative spirit
- We nurture our creative spirit
- We rise — we will not be held back. We take our place in the sun dutifully!
- We give / teach / help others by our gift
And don’t think that you need to be a creative writer or poet— you can be a fiddlehead in the dance world, the entertainment and beauty blogging world, the book review world, the world of painting and photography…you can be this dynamic creative being that absorbs, reflects, nurtures and grows.
Define the change you want to be.
Thank you for reading — I just wanted to inspire someone today.
Don’t we all?
Go ahead Fiddlehead. It is time for you to rise.
