YES, you are right. I will not defend the mindset of that time — only be grateful for the changes we have made and continue to make on that front. Unfortunately, when your medical situations are dire and someone needs to speak for you, if you are married, that person is your spouse. I do not know if my mother was able to speak for herself in this moment — but I suspect they asked him first. (Don’t get me started on that.)
I chose to interpret the positives from the story, but could also have written this as a feminism article.
